How Movie Pass Scammed their Customers to Pad Their Pockets | Corporate Casket

Welcome to the Corporate Casket, a semiweekly series where bad businesses go to die. We will discuss any and everything from bad charities, terrible CEOs, and businesses that have a lot to hide.

When MoviePass was introduced in 2011 it started off slow, with 30-dollar subscription fees for unlimited movies, the price was just a little too steep to grow subscribers. But when they put that down to only 10 dollars, their company absolutely exploded. The only problem was, that this low subscription price wasn’t sustainable and as the company started hemorrhaging money, they turned to some shady business practices to try to save themselves. But, it would actually wind up being their death sentence.

How Christians Cope with the Mediocrity of Their Own Religion

This is the famed Prophet of Zod. Here you find everything from satirical atheist cartoons to a guy with a static head and no discernible facial features.

Frank Turek recently uploaded a clip of himself talking about the role of Christians in American politics. It’s an interesting journey through the usual generalizations about the role of Christians in public life and how they’ve let the “secularists” take over the country, of course diving into expected paranoia about how they eventually won’t be free to practice their faith if they don’t stay actively engaged in politics. At the end, though, it takes an interesting turn, as it unwittingly expresses a deep insecurity about the relevance of their religion and WHY it isn’t getting more traction in our society. And perhaps questions of Christian engagement in politics helps them cope with this insecurity.

Triumph of the Will and the Cinematic Language of Propaganda

The Clickbait title of this video would be: Nazis hate him! Secrets of propaganda exposed!

The video is from Folding Ideas. He says: This took far longer to put together than I’d anticipated. It wasn’t even the work itself, it’s the emotional load. I eventually had to start chopping out huge planned segments, like looking at modern propaganda like that awful “Surfing in the DPRK” white guy rap video. I’m sorry about the downer ending, but there’s no way to spruce it up. To a certain degree we lost.

Don’t Look Up – A Problematic Metaphor For Climate Change?

This YouTuber says: Stories have always had a strong impact on me, they affected the way I look at the world, they helped make me a better person, and I wanted to better understand this relation; I wanted to articulate all those intangible feelings that stories invoked in me, how they moved me, and how they made feel more connected to myself and to the world and the people around me. But above all, I felt the need to put this out into the world, to confirm that I am not alone in this, that there are others who share these feelings too, and long to understand them.

RoboCop (1987) Retrospective/Review – Paul Verhoeven Sci-Fi Masterpiece Trilogy, Part 1

The 1980s was a great decade for science fiction. Between Star Wars and Star Trek, original blockbusters and scrappy low budget B-movies, my favourite three from this era make up what I call the “Paul Verhoeven Sci-Fi Masterpiece Trilogy.” Those movies are Starship Troopers, Total Recall and the subject of this retrospective, Robocop!
